On Friday 17, April starting at 4:00pm, an informal memorial ceremony is being planned for the banks of the Mekong River to commemorate the day that Khmer Rouge forces began mass evacuations from Phnom Penh. This memorial activity takes inspiration from the Angkor Songkran “prateeb” ceremony planned for the same day in front of Angkor Wat in Siem Reap. Participants are encouraged to purchase or create small and biodegradable “prateeb” offerings of lotus, incense and candles to float in honor of the memory of those who perished under Khmer Rouge rule. This event is open to the public.
